Does cheaper nail polish chip more than expensive nail polish?
Broad Question
Does cheaper nail polish chip more than expensive nail polish?
Specific Question
Does the cost of nail polish effect how much the nail polish will chip?
Hypothesis
It was hypothesized that the cheap nail polish was going to chip more than the expensive nail polish. This was hypothesized from the research that had been gathered from the internet. The other factors that lead to this hypothesis is the cost of the nail polish which is the independent variable and how mush of it chips off which was the dependent variable.
Variables
Independent Variable:
the cost of the nail polish
Dependent Variable:
how much it chips
Variables That Need To Be Controlled:
the time that the nail polish has been applied to the nails
Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation
nail polish- a substance that is made out of resins, solvent, coloring agent and film forming agent and is applied to nails to make them look pretty
General Plan
The plan is to figure out if cheap nail polish last long more than expensive nail polish. Painting every other finger nail of 10 test subjects with expensive nail polish and the other finger nails with cheap nail polish. In order to keep track of which is expensive and which is cheap they will be different colors. After that is taking pictures of the nails every other day, also every other day, measuring each nail to figure how much the nail polish has lasted longer. The experiment is being done at school in the science classroom.
10 test subject girls who are in either 7th or 8th grade (who do NOT bite their nails)
Cotton Balls
Nail Polish Remover
Camera
using a mm grid

Background Research
Cheaper nail polish does last longer because the people who make expensive nail polish just want look like its worth a lot of money. Some expensive brands of nail polish are expensive for a reason because they have some expensive ingredients in it, but it doesn’t mean it will last longer than cheap nail polish. The expensive nail polish seems to last longer than cheap nail polish but it also depends on the brand itself. It depends on the brand most of the time like what they put into it and stuff but I've been to numerous websites, and one person did a comparison with the brands Barry M the cheap nail polish and O.P.I. the expensive nail polish. The person applied the nail polish on a Monday and started with the brand Barry M. By Wednesday it had minor cracks, on Thursday it was peeling and it all came off. She applied some on her toes the Saturday before and she had it on for two weeks before minor cracks showed. She applied O.P.I on a Monday and it had Small chips by Thursday. Her conclusion was that it was worth buying expensive nail polish then cheap nail polish. Another person did another nail polish cheap vs expensive nail polish. She came up with yes, it is worth buying expensive nail polish, but beware of certain types of expensive brands for they can be cheating you of your money. Cheap brands are good too, but be careful of buying of buying off-name brands for they say that type nail polish might be not good for your nails. One way to see if you are getting really good cheap nail polish is by checking the ingredients on it and it is best to avoid the ones that have fragrance in them because they are not good for sensitive skin. Some ways to warn you if you are buying really bad cheap nail polish is to look on the label to see if it has been worn, a sign of age and settling of color at the bottom of it, is that it has been on the shelf for a long time.
1. Buy five cheap nail polish and five expensive nail polish 2. Get 10 test subject girls (7th or 8th grade) 3. Clean nails with nail polish remover before applying nail polish 4. Apply nail polish let it dry for 5 minutes 5. Create folders to store individual test subject’s photos of nails with their names on it (on paper not computer) 6. Every f block, take pictures of their nails if a test subject is absent erase all data gathered from that test subject 7. Keep doing this until 3/20 then compare the results to answer the question of “does cheap nail polish last longer than expensive nail polish
Photo List
One picture of each person's fingernails on day one (10 pictures) One picture of each person's fingernails on day seven (10 pictures) One picture of each person's nails on day fourteen (10 pictures) Above each hand that is having the picture taken, there will be note cards above each hand, for example the note card would include the person’s name, the brand of nail polish, the cost of the nail polish, and whether or not nail polish remover was used on each hand, and the date of the picture. (we will use four pictures of the hands from each day)
Results
All Raw Data
The results of our experiment came out that expensive nail polish lasts longer than cheaper nail polish. The smallest amount of nail polish chipped off were all expensive nail polish and the cheaper ones chipped off more. The one with the highest average 232(mm2) which was a NYC tangerine, the lowest 108(mm2) Rimmel pink. The other types of brands we used were Revlon green, Rimmel Purple which were all expensive. The other cheap brands were NYC tangerine, Wet’n Wild sunny side up and NYC purple.

Conclusion
This experiment was based on figuring out if cheap nail polish lasts longer than expensive, and if it was going to chip more. The independent variable of this experiment was the cost of the nail polish. The dependent variable was how much it chips. The cheaper nail polish chipped more than the expensive nail polish. The cheap average was 194mm2, and the expensive average was 140mm2.
Discussion
The question was “does cheap nail polish last longer than expensive and does it chip more?” The question was answered, and the answer was very clear that cheap nail polish does chip more, and it doesn’t last longer than expensive. The evidence was on the trials fingers, that is how the answer was discovered. The finger nails proved the answer to be correct. The hypothesis was supported by the results, the hypothesis was the answer. It was hypothesized that the cheap nail polish would not last longer than the expensive and it would definitely chip more. And the hypothesis turned out to be true. The patterns that could be identified within the data and observations, it was found consistently that the expensive nail polish would always chip less than cheaper nail polish. We used several brands which was the independent variable and the dependent variable is how much chipped off which was constantly changing over the days During this experiment there was a couple challenges one of the ones we could not have controlled was that two of the girls scratch off their nail polish and therefore had to delete the data collected from them. We could have improved this project by asking what the test subjects did during their day that cause chipping different people have different things they do so it could chip faster or slower but it didn’t matter what type of nail polish. The information that was used mostly came from beauty websites giving opinions about which is the best nail polish to be used, some of the suggested were used in this experiment. The only technology that was used during this experiment was a digital camera to take pictures of the test subject’s nails and a computer to put down the data. The results that we gather will help people with the same question by the brands of nail polish used in this experiment so the person will know how much chipped off with that brand. The knowledge gained from this experiment could be of use to anyone. Anyone who wears nail polish and is looking for a great nail polish to use that will not chip. The problems that is might help solve would be, the use of nail polish. The results would help many people choose the best type of nail polish. Mostly teenage girls, but also adults, and children. The new breakthroughs in information would be, which brand would be better so that they would not waste production on other nail polish brands and just use the several brands that will last the longest and is better for your nails.
